Fragrance-Free Cleaning – an easy, eco, low-tox choice…

Fragrance-Free Cleaning – an easy, eco, low-tox choice…

Most mainstream cleaning products contain powerful fragrances with the aim of leaving your home smelling ‘clean’ and inviting (although I would argue that ‘Winter Wonderland Freeze’ or ‘Tropical Sunset Surprise’ do neither). However, cleaning product manufacturers aren’t required to disclose their fragrance ingredients or formulations (as protected trade secrets). So, even if you shell-out for the ‘designer’ fragrances, the scent rarely lasts more than a few minutes, and you are likely exposing your family to unknown or unnecessary allergens and toxins (yes, even where the fragrances are ‘all natural’ or ‘essential oils’).

The Benefits of Cleaning with Fragrance-Free Products:

1. Reduced Allergens and Irritants

Cleaning product fragrances often contain a complex mix of chemicals, some of which can trigger allergies, asthma, or skin irritation. For individuals with sensitive skin or respiratory conditions, fragrance-free alternatives provide a safer option and reduce the risk of allergic reactions.

2. Better Air Quality

Many traditional cleaning products release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air, contributing to indoor air pollution. Fragrance-free cleaning products tend to have lower (or zero) levels of VOCs, improving the air quality in your home. VOC-free products are particularly important for people with asthma or respiratory issues.

3. Avoid the Dreaded ‘Fume Headache’

Fragrances are often the culprit in triggering headaches, nausea, or migraines. People who are sensitive to strong smells or chemicals can benefit from fragrance-free cleaners that offer effective cleaning without the risk of unwanted side effects. If you need to use a product in a well-ventilated area, you should steer clear of it all together – and avoid the fume headache with fragrance-free alternatives.

4. Smaller Carbon Footprint

Fragrance-free cleaning products are often formulated with fewer ingredients – which can reduce the overall carbon footprint of the product (because each ingredient carries with it its own supply chain and associated carbon footprint). Eliminating fragrance from a product also reduces the overall chemical load in water systems after the products are used.

5. Clean Smells Good!

If something is clean, it doesn’t need added fragrance to make it smell good – CLEAN smells good (without unnecessary chemicals and the associated safety, health and environmental impact).
